Insights into the use of the SimVSM app at LATC
How is digitalisation changing value stream analysis and what role does the SimVSM app play in this? Prof. Dr. Sven Spieckermann, CEO of SimPlan AG, and Martin Dahinten, managing director and consultant at Sieben Consulting, discussed these questions in a joint interview. The interview was recorded in preparation for LATC Lean Around the Clock in March 2025, the largest lean management conference in the German-speaking world. Practical experience from customer consulting
Martin Dahinten reports on his consulting practice and shows how the app is used in projects. He particularly emphasises how easy it is with SimVSM to not only digitally map value streams, but also to simulate them. This ability to realistically recreate processes and run through different scenarios opens up new perspectives for companies when making strategic decisions. This allows bottlenecks to be identified and optimisation potential to be systematically evaluated – a real added value for process design.
Another aspect that Martin Dahinten emphasises is user-friendliness. The intuitive operation ensures that even teams without extensive training can quickly work productively with the software. At the same time, he makes suggestions for future features that he believes could make working with SimVSM even more efficient. This practical approach is particularly valuable for further development.
Combining analogue and digital methods in a meaningful way
The interview also shows how well analogue methods and digital tools complement each other. Many consulting projects still start with physical symbols or cards, for example from Sieben’s value stream kit. Transferring this to the SimVSM app creates a flexible, digital model that can be adapted, analysed and expanded with simulations at any time.
